If you are thinking of planning your dream holiday or returning from your latest getaway, you may be tempted to begin browsing Skyscanner for your next exciting trip away.

It may be the case that you have discussed a potential dream destination with other members of your family and are starting to research the potential cost of travelling to such a destination.

When you immediately realise the cost of flights appear to be out of your range and thus your dream holiday search comes to a juddering halt before your research has even commenced.

Rather than continuing on with your research you are suddenly deterred and decide to settle for a cheaper destination, a holiday you have been on several times before or spend your proposed holiday budget on more mundane items such as painting a fence or buying new wallpaper.

Hopefully the below article will provide you with some ideas on how to get a better deal by making the most of the Skyscanner comparison website.

How To Improve Your Chances Of A Cheaper Flight

The first rule when looking to try to purchase a cheaper flight is to be as flexible as you can be. Being flexible with your dates and destination will give you access to a wider scope of prices that will be give you a greater chance of gaining the best available deal within your budget.

When commencing your search for new flights on Skyscanner, you will always get a wider selection of flights by choosing a specific month of the year you wish to fly as opposed to exact dates. This will then provide you with the cheapest flight available for each day of the month therefore providing you with an opportunity to select the cheapest flight available.

Within the Skyscanner website there is also the opportunity to select an even wider range of flights available by broadening the search of your departure airport. Rather than selecting the airport which may be located closest to you, why not select all airports in your country for your research.

For example if you wish to travel from the United Kingdom to Alicante then rather than select a specific airport such as Manchester or Heathrow, why not input United Kingdom as your departure airport. This will then bring up a list of airports within the United Kingdom and the cheapest prices available for each airport during your selected travel period so that you can compare which is the cheapest airport nearest to you to travel from.

To broaden your search further you can also select to search the country of your destination rather than a specific destination.

In this example you could select the destination as Spain as opposed to Alicante which would bring up a list of all airports listed in Spain. From here you could then potentially select the cheapest airport to travel to within reasonable travel distance of your accommodation.

Direct or Indirect Flights

If you are flexible with the route to your destination and your main priority is not to find the quickest route available then allowing your flight search to filter through Indirect Flights may provide you with a cheaper flying option.

An indirect flight is where your journey may consist of one or more stops on route to your destination. For example if traveling from Manchester to Alicante it may be that the cheapest flight available is an indirect flight which includes a stop off at Amsterdam.

Indirect Flights are often cheaper as direct flights have higher demand and are more convenient therefore the carrier can charge more whereas airlines offering flights to other airports are essentially making their hub and spoke operation more efficient which is why the fees are lower and the flights maybe lower in demand.

Please note that the option of Indirect Flights may not be the preferred method of travel for families travelling with young children as there is the potential for a lot of hanging around airports whilst waiting for connecting flights.

One Way Trips or Return

When booking your flights you will also have the choice on whether you wish to search for a one way flight or return flight. The standard way of searching when booking a family holiday is to select a return trip as the idea when you go on holiday for most families is that at some point you will return on a defined date.

However, you will note that should you select the return flight option on your search that once you click on a date for your outbound journey that the dates for the return journey dates almost always change and quite often will increase.

Therefore, it is worth considering whether to carry out two separate one way searches for your outbound and return journey. This is a slightly riskier approach as it can leave you with one flight booked for your journey however there is a chance that by carrying two separate searches that you may find two cheaper flights.

Please note that if you do book your flights separately on two separate days that you don’t leave the booking of your second flight too late as the closer you get to your departure date the higher the risk that the cost of the flight will increase.

How Far In Advance to Search for a Flight

Although it is well-known that last minute deals are often available these often come in the form of specific dates of travel and offer limited flexibility with regard to your route of travel.

In order to plan a trip thoroughly, on your terms and in order to get the best available deal there is an advisable period of time to book your flights ahead of your departure.

It is commonly advised that a period of one to five months is a reasonable period of time ahead of your trip to find the best deal available. However, if you are travelling somewhere in high demand due to time of year or an event then it may be advisable to book earlier to avoid disappointment.

Why Use Skyscanner

There are many price comparison websites out there at the moment to assist you in searching and comparing flight prices such as Opodo or GoEuro. However, for the most thorough and comprehensive search solely on flights, Skyscanner still stands head and shoulders above the rest.

The wide variety of search options for departure and destination points plus the flexibility on date options allows you to carry out some in depth research before making your booking.

I must thank you for revealing this site because I always wanted to find reliable and trusted agency to organize my flights. Although it is still a winter I heard that so many people look for summer flights and it is better to be prepared. I will definitely take a closer look on Skyscanner.

Great idea. I really don’t know why I wasn’t thinking of avoiding choosing a specific city, I can only see I was worsting approximately $137 each time I was traveling to United Kingdom (Manchester) from my country. Whenever I thought of avoiding high costs, I would think of avoiding emergency/specific dates.

Thank you so much for such great tips, my next trip is going to be cheaper

    Hi Richard,

Thank you for your tips to get cheaper flight for holidays.

My husband and I travelled to visit our parents every year.  We always booked our flight online. Your recommendation of Skyscanner will be very useful for us to plan our next trip.

I like your idea on destination search. We will be able to compare the prices from different departure and destination airports.

  5. Kabirat says:

This is an eye opener to the intricacies of cheaper flight booking. Now I know how to search for cheaper pricing by doing an extensive research of a month’s price instead of the specific date I would like to travel thereby planning my travelling towards when there will be a cheaper flight.

You have also open my eyes to booking an indirect flight as opposed to a direct flight and searching for all airport instead of a specific one.Now I can go to places of interest which might not be possible before as a result of high cost.

Skyscanner is of course the way to go.

Thank you for your comments Kabirat, hopefully some of the tips in the above article can assist you when making your next reservation.

    Hi there,

    WOW, awesome article!

Lots of useful information! My son and his friends are planning a trip to Europe very soon and they are all student. So they are on a budget:) This would be perfect for them. I’ll show this article to my son so he can check it out and see the prices. I do have a question, though. Are the deals always available? In short, can we get good deals all year round?

    Thank you!

    1. Richard Leaver says:

Thank you for your comments Daniella,

Yes by reviewing the Skyscanner webpage month by month you should always be able to find a deal. The prices of flight tend to be cheaper at off peak times such as during school term. However with a little bit of research you should always be able to locate a deal.

    Hey there Richard,

thanks for such informative and helpful article, I’ve really enjoyed reading it and learning something new today! As far as skyscanner goes, I have to say- I am very impressed by it. As a person who travels a lot, I am always on the look for great flight deals to save some money. I really admire the concept of Skyscanner and what it has to offer. First of all, I am really digging the layout & design of this program- it looks to be very comfortable to navigate through as well as user-friendly & easy to pick up. The second big reason why I like it is the fact that it delivers very detailed & in-depth flight researches with lots of very valuable & important information, such as departure-destination points, date options, direct or in-direct flights and much more. It’s packed with features that will come in very handy! I can’t wait to try out Skyscanner in the near future for my next trip.

Keep up the great work Richard 😉

    1. Richard Leaver says:

Glad you enjoyed the article Evald,

I would not plan a trip abroad by flight these days without carrying out a search on Skyscanner which I see as the basis for all research to be carried out.

  8. Nate says:

I’m not the best planner but I’m getting better. Me and my girlfriend love on going on trips for special occasions (when there’s money in the bank, of course). Skyscanner is really cool! I haven’t seen any other apps offer a calender of prices each day for the whole month, that’s awesome! All about saving money, I wonder if I could save more by booking above 5 months?

    1. Richard Leaver says:

      Thank you for comments Nate,

If you are going somewhere which you expect to be high in demand then it is definitely worth booking at the earliest opportunity.

However if you are not, I would research the prices over a short period of time to see whether there is any fluctuation in price as airlines can quite often have flash sales and you maybe able to bag yourself a bargain.

  9. Eric says:

I just did a search using Skyscanner for a trip I am planning in February. The prices are definitely cheaper than what I was originally looking for. I was flexible with the dates and that seems to have made a huge difference. Thanks for the tips on using this site effectively. Now I have more money for food and recreation.

    1. Richard Leaver says:

Thank you for your comment Eric,

Yes the more flexible you can be with your trip the more cheaper your trip will be. Enjoy your travels.

  10. Barry Bullard says:

You know a lot of times I have to go to multiple different sources to get information but this is the third post i’ve checked out and it’s awesome.   I didn’t know something like skyscanner even existed.

It seems a lot easier to use than orbitz which is what i have been using up until this point.

Do you find that specific airlines tend to give better deals over others or does it vary?  I would love your input.

    1. Richard Leaver says:

      Thank you for comments Barry,

I tend to find that different airlines have offers at different times and will quite often try to under cut each other. There are many low budget airlines in Europe worth looking at such as Ryanair, EasyJet, Wizz Air and Norwegian Airlines who can all offer competitive prices.

Therefore in order to save time it is often quite useful to utilise a price comparison website such as Skyscanner.

    Hi there Richard

Thanks for sharing, I do love my travels, from short trips to long haul flights but one thing I always keep top is finding the best price I can get, although I know many travel booking sites, never heard of Skyscanner.

Trying to keep my flight tickets cheap, I do opt for the +- 3 days and see what`s the best deal.

I have really enjoyed your post and will sure check out sky scanner as my next vacation should be over the Easter period,it`s usually abit expensive to fly then but then it`s usually a short vacation somewhere is Europe.

thanks so much for sharing, really appreciate your tips.As said, will have to check Sky Scanner and see what they have to offer.

    Cheers Roamy

    1. Richard Leaver says:

Thank you for your comments Roamy,

The great thing about Skyscanner is that you can search over a full monthly period rather than a few days so it gives you a greater flexibility and allows you to view a wider range of pricing.

You are correct that the Easter period will be more expensive however there are many great sales on at the moment with many airlines so you may be able to bag yourself a great deal.

  14. Kevin says:

Thanks for turning me on to Skyscanner. I wasn’t aware that such a valuable tool was out there for the public to use, in order to find out how to get ahold of the flights they need that will provide them with the flexibility they need when planning the vacation of their dreams, within their family’s budget and within their predetermined schedule. For these people, they do need something that’s thorough and comprehensive, especially in an age when people have generally become their own travel agents and are doing these sort of bookings on their own, with the help of internet tools such as SkyScanner.

I appreciate your post. Thanks for all of the good information.

    1. Richard Leaver says:

      Thank you for comments Kevin,

Skycanner is an amazing tool with a high degree of flexibility allowing you to find the best available journey to suit your needs.

  15. Barry says:

Hoi Richard! Thanks so much for sharing this awesome article sharing in detail Skyscanner. I am aiming to go on vacation very soon. 16. Henry says:

Hi! These tips for getting a cheaper flight are very useful! I had thought in quite a few of them. But one that now seems quite obvious (after reading your post), I must admit that I had never thought in it. And it’s to set the country instead of the specific departure or arrival airport. I plan to take vacations on May 2019, and I’ll start to use Skyscanner from now to book a good deal! Thank you very much!

    1. Richard Leaver says:

      Thank you for comments Henry,

It always helps to broaden your approach in the first option and then narrow it down until you find the deal that suits you.
