Each year millions of people from all over the globe head on holiday and many are looking for the best available deal they can get. Whether they are a single traveller, travelling in couples or families, most will have a limited budget to spend in order to achieve their dream vacation.

Within the decision-making process of planning a holiday many people will often decide whether they wish to hire a car for their vacation and secondly the affordability of whether they can afford to hire a car. The below article takes a look at the benefits of hiring a car on holiday and how to get cheap car hire with Holiday Autos.

Benefits of Hiring a Car

Hiring a car can be a convenient and relaxed way to travel on your holiday. There are many benefits to hiring a car such as:

Having your own independence when travelling abroad cannot be underestimated. Having the option to go where you want, whenever you want is an enjoyable luxury to have when on holiday. Being able to travel independently allows to explore your local area in more depth and make impromptu stop offs that you would ordinarily be unable to if travelling by public transport.

Some fantastic advantages of hiring a car are shown below:

An advantage of hiring a car is that you can pretty much store what you want, wherever you want in your vehicle. Unlike on Public Transport where everything normally has to be packed in a certain way and crammed into the boot or over head luggage compartments.

Be careful though not to cram your car with too much stuff if travelling home by plane, as you can quite often be caught out by having too much luggage at check in and end up with a hefty additional fee.

If travelling with family and friends, hiring a car can provide you with a fantastic opportunity to really bond by laughing and joking with your fellow-travellers or even providing the opportunity to kick back and listen to some tunes which you probably would not be able to do on public transport.

Although every form of transport you ride should be safe, you should feel more assured with yourself at the wheel plus if travelling with young children you should be able to ensure that they are suitably strapped into their required car seats.

Potential Additional Costs of Hiring a Car

When hiring a car there are many potential extras you maybe susceptible to paying if you are not careful. Potential extras to look out for and potentially avoid are detailed below

Additional Car Insurance

When collecting your car it is likely that a sales clerk will attempt to charge for an extra service such as fully comprehensive insurance cover. This can easily be avoided by taking out your own private car excess insurance ahead of your journey.

Taking out your own cover will often work out much cheaper than the insurance costs offered directly by car hire companies and can often be purchased for a 12-month period. This can offer quite a saving if hiring a car on more than one occasion over a 12-month period.

Please note that if you do choose to take out your own excess insurance that you ensure you take a credit card with you on your trip in your own name with credit available as it likely that the car hire company will wish to block your card during the period of your hire.

This is nothing to about if you have taken out your own excess insurance however if you fail to take your own card it is likely that you will have to purchase the car hire companies insurance to be able to complete the hire of your vehicle.

Dropping Off at Different Location to Pick Up

If you wish to drop off your vehicle off at a different location to where you collect it (for example picking it up in Las Vegas and dropping it off in San Francisco), please note that the cost of hiring a vehicle is going be a lot more expensive than picking it up and returning it to the same location

Different Charges for Drivers Aged Below 25 or over 75

Many companies charge an increased tariff for drivers below or above a certain age limit, therefore it is worth checking out whether the company you are hiring from has increased the cost of hire before completing a transaction.

Additional Drivers

Many car hire companies charge for additional drivers therefore it is worth considering whether it is necessary for there to be an additional driver for your trip.

If you are adamant that there should be more than one named driver for your trip, it is worth checking out various companies to see if there are any car hire companies with offers for free additional drivers as this can offer quite a saving.

Car Seats

Hiring car seats for children can be an expensive addition when hiring a car. This can easily be avoided by simply taking your own. It is relatively unknown that most airlines allow you to take on board car seats at no extra charge and items such as booster seats can easily be stored in pram bags or even suitcases.

If travelling by air, it is worth checking with your airline whether there is any additional charge for car seats as this can offer quite a saving.

Sat Navs

The hiring of Sat Navs can also be a costly business when hiring a car. This can easily be avoided by taking your own or purchasing a cheap one for your destination as it is still likely that it will work out cheaper than hiring one when your there.

Airport Taxes

If you’re hiring a car from an airport it is important to take note of any additional airport taxes which maybe applicable upon your arrival. If the airport tax is quite high it maybe worth weighing up whether it is cheaper to hire a car from a nearby pick up point away from the airport.

Alternative Transfer Options

There are of course many alternative transport options when going on holiday and which may be a cheaper or convenient mode of transport dependent on several factors such as nature of your holiday, how many people are in your party and distance to your accommodation.

For example if you are going on a beach holiday as a couple and your resort is only 20 minutes from the airport then one of the following transfer options maybe more suitable for you:

  • Bus/Coach Transfer – Quite often these come in two modes a standard transfer which may include several stop offs or a private coach transfer which may have a limited number of stops.
  • Taxi Transfer – A private and more direct mode of transportation which may come at a higher cost dependent on the number of people travelling in your group.
  • Rail/Tram – If there is a railway or tram station at the departure point and destination then this maybe a more convenient mode of transportation.
  • Walk – If you destination is close by and you are travelling light then walking will definitely be your cheapest and healthiest option.

For millions of people, hiring a car is the most convenient way to travel when away from home. There are many benefits to hiring a car such as convenience, independence and even if you hire domestically you are potentially saving on mileage and maintenance on your own vehicle.

However, before hiring a car it is important that you are comfortable driving a different vehicle to your own, are familiar with the road laws, if driving in another country and are also confident enough to drive on the opposite side of the road if you are in a country where this is required.

I’d much prefer hiring a car when away rather than taking taxis, lyfts and ubers. I like to be able to drive myself where I need to instead of waiting for someone. Being able to decide when to leave right then and there is much better than the alternatives. Especially when you’re nowhere near home.

Now this is a useful site, which I have bookmarked because myself and my wife do travel lots and this is right up our street, being that its UK focused

You have obviously researched the topic well and have looked for the value and benefits with what you have written about

I enjoyed reading this blog, which has obviously been well thought out content wise and something that will be useful for myself and my wife to refer to as we (well she) are always looking for budget but good value holidays and bingo, you produce this site.

Enjoyed all of it, and would suggest that you have maybe a start here tab at the bottom, maybe 2 or 3 others at most and when doing the content, link to your sub menu from with the content pages, as opposed to the drop down menu. Doing this will help with your bounce rate and google ranking, which will ultimately lead to more views for you

I have book marked the site as well. : )

Thank you for your comments Dave,

I will take your feedback on board and look to implement sub menus for my posts to make my website more user friendly and improve the overall experience.

Very informative blog! I am someone who travels a lot so I am very familiar with the various “pitfalls” involved with deciding to hire a car. It definitely has more positives than negatives, but I completely agree with the Insurance part! – this makes life easier b/c you never know when something may go wrong, so it’s always a good idea “to be safe, just in case.”

    Thanks for sharing.

      Thank you for comment Matt,

Yes, ensuring you have the correct insurance is paramount when hiring a car as well as making sure that you carry out your own research so that you are not paying too much.

You hadn’t said so explicitly, but I think that the theme of your article is independence. Without a rented vehicle of your own, while you’re away, you are dependent on taxis, Uber / Lyft, or public transportation. The latter, if you’ve ever been the new person in any metropolitan or suburban area with public transport, as you know, takes some time to learn and, as a result, you’re often asking strangers about how the thing works, where to stand, what the schedule is, where the schedule is, and whatnot.

Thanks for your post. You’ve confirmed so much of what I had already believed about car rentals.

    1. Richard Leaver says:

Thank you for your comments Kevin,

There is nothing like the independence of hiring a car and as you state it can definitely cut down on the cost of using public transport in the long term.

Just the other day, I was looking for cars to hire. I wasn’t looking for a car for the holiday. I need one because my car needs to be fixed but there is no mechanic available for the holidays to fix it. Maybe I should check out Holiday Autos to see what their rates are like.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

    1. Richard Leaver says:

      Thank you for comment Britney,

Yes, Holiday Autos should be able to scour the car hire market locally to you in order to meet your requirements.

I’ve never try renting a car during holiday in another country. Not familiar and pretty scary for me. Didn’t have any international driving license as well. But recently one of my friend is suggesting a backpacking to Europe countries and we are thinking to rent a caravan. Do you know any good companies that provide caravan for rental?

    1. Richard Leaver says:

Thank you for your comments Florence,

If you are thinking of renting a caravan there are many things to consider. Firstly are you looking for a motorhome, caravan that you tow or just renting static caravans. You will then need to ensure that your license covers the proposed vehicle you wish to hire.

Once decided I would then research the country you propose visiting to see what companies specialise in this type of hire.

Thank you for sharing. I find it very useful to know about the options when renting a car for holidays, vacations etc.

If you just walk up to the counter at the airport, the deals are nowhere to be found so knowing where to rent when planning the trip is a big plus. I have used holidaysautos so many times and I have never been dissapointed. Best prices and with their app it is so easy and convenient.

  9. Kevin says:

Hi, thanks so much for your post about hiring a car whilst on holiday. We always hire a car when away as we love to explore and have our freedom. I can’t think of anything worse than being stuck in one place. Of course, the headache is always knowing where to get the best deal as prices and levels of cover can vary greatly. Having a single point of reference such as holiday autos will be a great help. I had a quick look for hire where I live in Gran Canaria and the have some great options so thanks very much.

  10. Carlos says:

Hiring a car offers freedom when you are traveling. I love it!

I’ve been doing it for years when going around with friends and now with my family.

I just want to add something to the content of this article. Please, check in advance what are the conditions and driving license required in the country where you plan to hire a car. In some places they accept foreign driving licenses if there is an agreement between countries. However, in most countries is required to have an international driving license.

And don’t think that the company where you’ll hire the car will provide the right information. Some just want your money and then you’ll have to deal with police.

It happened to us during a trip in Thailand. We rented a car from a local company just with a UK car driving license. After a few days of going around, police stopped us on a check point and asked for the international driving license. The result was a fine, but luckily they allowed us to keep going.

    1. Richard Leaver says:

Thank you for your comments Carlos,

A point well made that you should always check that your license is legitimate for the country you are hiring a vehicle from.

    Hello Richard,

I am planning to take a vacation trip to Miami with my wife in the coming months.

I find the company that you promote very interesting because of the savings that we can obtain when renting a car.

We love independence to know different places our privacy.

We will take into account the possible additional costs that we may have in car rental.

Thank you very much for the excellent information provided.

    Regards! Claudio

Thank you for your comments Claudio and hopefully this article will assist with your future travels.

DON’T USE CAR TRAWLER OR HOLIDAY AUTOS we booked a car for 4 days to collect at 12 from Milan airport, arrived at 5pm to collect was told we were to late & our agreement had been terminated.
We paid for the car for 4 days so whatever time we turn up should make no difference. Spoke to Holiday Autos no refund due as no show, no car.

We had to hire another car from Avis which showed online price of 70 euros got charged 299 euros, if we wanted on line price we would have to wait 3 hours! Total scam do not use.
